How to Cel-Shade Hair

Description

I worked this one out a while ago, and I figured I'd share the technique because it's super easy. If you happen to like it, fantastic! Maybe give it a whirl on your own art or modify it into something new. These are just six steps I use for super shiny hair! WOO!

//STEP 1//
Select the area you want to color. I selected Toad's hair!

//STEP 2//
Fill the area with a base color. I chose a medium desaturated brown.

//STEP 3//
Select shadowed bits. I usually do this by making random pointy selections with my mouse. No rhyme or reason; just pick the parts that would be "shadowy". I snagged the tips of his hair because they would be darker as they curl under. Also behind his ear and a little to show where a hair part might be. Fill these selected bits with a darker color!

//STEP 4//
Select the highlighted bits. Same as step 3, only I made the selections smoother and less jagged. Fill these selected bits with a lighter color!

//STEP 5//
Select a thin wiggly stripe through the "highlighted areas". In the parts where I painted the lighter color, I selected small thin lines. By filling these in even lighter (you can use white too for more contrast) it gives the impression of high gloss!

//STEP 6//
Put some lense flares in the "white stripes". In Photoshop, go to: "Filter >> Render >> Lense Flare" . If you're unfamiliar with this function, it basically adds a little "sparkly". I did this four times, placing the lense flare near to the line, so that it would "fuzz out" a bit and create a halo hue.

WOOT! That's pretty much it. Hope you found this helpful or marginally interesting. XD
